We don’t need another groundbreaking climate report to tell us that we’re in a climate emergency. Every year, more hurricanes slam into the Gulf Coast, bigger fires tear through the West and more and more people struggle to breathe clean air or survive record heat waves.

It’s been five years since Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey introduced the Green New Deal Resolution. That resolution outlined a new vision for our country and our movement: one where we averted the worst of the climate crisis, created millions of good-paying, union jobs, and invested in the communities that bear the brunt of the fossil fuel economy.

Now, for the first time, substantial climate justice legislation guided by communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis has been introduced that builds toward a Green New Deal. But the question is, will our elected officials step up and show us they are doing everything they can to fight for us?

We know we need to win federal climate legislation to tackle this crisis, but we can’t wait until we have the right majorities in Congress to get to work. We need to do everything we can, now, to pressure our elected officials to support the bills that will put us on the path to a Green New Deal — that’s how we’ll set ourselves up to win legislation when the moment comes.

We’re asking candidates to sign the Green New Deal Pledge to commit to fighting for a Green New Deal should they be elected, and we’re asking current members of Congress to show us they are doing everything in their power to pass a Green New Deal right now. Anything less is a compromise on our futures.

The Green New Deal is a historic vision to transform our society and economy, invest in communities, and secure a thriving future for all people and the planet. This project is just one of countless movement efforts across the country and globe working in tandem to build and win a Green New Deal, including but not limited to the Red Deal, the United Frontline Table’s People’s Orientation to a Regenerative Economy, Farmers & Ranchers for a Green New Deal, Gulf South for a Green New Deal, and People vs. Fossil Fuels.
